BEGINNING MAY 1 - Open
Mic Nights on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of
the month.
Coming June 4 at 8pm
- Starch & Iron: banjo and
fiddle duets by Joel Lensch and Chris Mattingly.
The music of Starch & Iron represents a distilled
version of Appalachian mountain music, which was
originally transplanted from the British Isles.
While many of the tunes Starch & Iron play have
their basis in Ireland, Scotland, and England,
the tunes have undergone significant rhythmic
and tonal changes while in the Southern mountains.
One of the largest differences between the tunes
played in both the British Isles and Appalachia
comes from the influence of African rhythms. Not
only do the earliest forms of the banjo come from
Africa, but African-Americans also approached
the fiddle as a rhythmic instrument. When whites
and blacks combined these vigorous new rhythms
to old melodies we get a dynamic repertoire of
tunes that are peppy, lonesome, humorous, ancient
and eerily current. Centuries of history are distilled
in the old music of Starch & Iron.
